Ant-Man and the Wasp is projected for a big opening weekend box office in China. Marvel Studios started the year with massive box office hits in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, leaving the sequel to Ant-Man to try and follow in their footsteps. The fun-loving sequel debuted in the US back in July to a solid $75M opening weekend. However, the roll out for the film globally has been possibly the most bizarre for any MCU film. The staggered release schedule has made Ant-Man 2 slowly climb the box office charts instead of making huge leaps.

Although a large number of territories got Ant-Man and the Wasp during its early July release, the UK, for example, had to wait nearly a month to get the latest MCU film as a result of the World Cup. During this time, the movie did secure the highly coveted release in China. With it now just days away from premiering, the box office projections look strong.

Chinese box office analyst Gavin Feng reports Ant-Man and The Wasp is projected to make $65 million in its opening weekend in China. This will be a huge opening for the film and bolster its current box office total. These projections also mean that Ant-Man and the Wasp will easily surpass the original film’s launch, which was $42M back in 2015.

The first Ant-Man went on to gross over $100M in China alone, and with Ant-Man and the Wasp expected to open well above the first, an even larger haul is likely in store. The original film’s opening accounted for 40.6 percent of the film’s total $105M run. If Ant-Man and the Wasp can hold just as well, then a final tally of $160M in China is possible. However, Spider-Man: Homecoming opened to $69M last year but finished with $116M total, and Black Panther opened to $65M this year for a $105M total.

Ant-Man and the Wasp currently has a worldwide total of $466M, but China looks to easily become the film’s best international territory. South Korea is currently the highest grossing foreign territory after a $20M opening. All in all, the Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly-led sequel has made $257M overseas. With China poised to greatly increase this total, then the film will finally surpass the original Ant-Man’s $519.3M worldwide gross. If China and Japan (the film’s final release next week) do wind up loving the movie, then surpassing Iron Man’s $585.2M total could be within range. Either way, Ant-Man and The Wasp will wind up being bigger than its predecessor.
