Captain America: Civil War held its official premiere at CinemaCon, and the reviews are so positive that Marvel lifted the press embargo a month early. As with each new Marvel Cinematic Universe feature, the new sequel reportedly does double-duty advancing its own storyline and giving a hat-tip to other characters and story threads in the ongoing Marvel continuity. That includes the first looks at new/rebooted heroes who’ll soon headline features of their own, like Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man.
Also said to be making a surprisingly big showing in the film is Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man, getting more exposure before his own team-up sequel in 2018, titled Ant-Man & The Wasp. Moreover, according to director Peyton Reed (who is returning from the first Ant-Man film for the followup), we haven’t seen anything yet.
Speaking on the"blue carpet" rolled out for the Civil War premiere (hat tip to Coming Soon), Ant-Man franchise helmer Peyton Reed was asked what was in store for the follow-up. The director offered some big teases for fans of the small hero (and his equally-diminutive partner):
While the original Ant-Man focused mainly on Rudd’s Scott Lang learning the more basic version of his abilities (shrinking himself, shrinking other things, communicating with ants), it also offered a brief view of his more esoteric abilities - such as shrinking to the point where he can slip between the boundaries of time and space and even briefly experiencing a kind of fractal dimension (something also depicted in the reality-warping effects featured in the newly-unveiled Doctor Strange trailer). Even more Ant-Man powers are said to be on display in Civil War, so it should prove interesting to see what else the filmmakers have up their sleeves.
“We’re hard at work writing the movie right now. So we’ve been holed up in a room, Paul Rudd, myself, Adam McKay, Gabriel Ferrari, and Andrew Barrer, who are our writers. So we’re all brainstorming the story. I think the only thing I can tell you with certainty at this point, because we’re still about two years away from the movie coming out, is that it’s going to have stuff in it that you’ve never ever seen in a movie before.”
One possibility could involve the unresolved plot thread of original Ant-Man Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) search for his wife Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp. Flashbacks in that film revealed that Janet had been presumed lost to the “subatomic realm” after shrinking beyond the point of no return in an act of heroism, but Lang’s ability to perform the same action and return left Pym with the question of whether Janet may yet have survived. With Pym’s daughter Hope (Evangeline Lily) becoming the new Wasp for the sequel, it’s plausible that this storyline could be revisited and even resolved as part of the main plot.
