Captain America originally had a hilarious cameo in Ant-Man and The Wasp. Marvel Studios’ 2018 slate is already complete now that the sequel to Ant-Man is in theaters. Much like the first film, the sequel largely stands on its own. There’s references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe of course, but this time director Peyton Reed and his team didn’t work in any surprise cameos. In the first film, Anthony Mackie reprised his role as Falcon to tie everything together.

As much as Ant-Man and The Wasp is a sequel to the first movie, it also had to follow up Paul Rudd returning as Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He joined Team Cap in the movie and was put on house arrest as a result, which is what makes the ticking clock in the sequel. As it turns out, there was originally an idea to have Chris Evans make another MCU cameo.

In a new interview with Radio Times, director Peyton Reed revealed an early plan that could’ve brought Captain America into the film. The potential scene would’ve came in one of Ant-Man and The Wasp’s standout sequences, where Luis (Michael Pena) gives his take on past events. Although it didn’t make it into the final script, they thought about having Cap appear in Luis’ latest story to help recreate Civil War’s airport fight.

On paper, this sounds like a great idea that gives Evans another chance to play Captain America with a bit more campiness. He’s already mocked himself a bit in his Thor: The Dark World cameo where he had to play Loki disguised as America’s hero. There were even the informational videos he did for Spider-Man: Homecoming that were featured in the actual movie and as the post-credits scene. Doing something similarly out of character would’ve only added to the comedy in the Luis scene, while also giving them a chance to play with the ridiculousness of Luis’ imagination.

Early on, we had a version where we were going to do a quick version of the tarmac fight from Civil War, with some ridiculous thing where, you know, Captain America has Ant-Man as a baseball and throws him. Because the whole thing is Luis’ version of events, right?

Ant-Man and The Wasp’s production timeline crossed paths with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, so with Rudd already pulling double duty, it probably wouldn’t have been too difficult to get Evans to do the same. That said, not including a Captain America cameo doesn’t hurt Ant-Man and The Wasp. Reed felt like they were already referencing Civil War so much that they could get away with not including this moment and instead focusing on their own story. Thankfully, Avengers 4 is going to properly reunite Ant-Man and Captain America, so maybe Cap can throw Ant-Man like a baseball as part of the master plan to stop Thanos.
