Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been abuzz of late in regards to discussing the impending slate of Phase 3 films due out over the course of few years, with Captain America: Civil War being the main event at the immediate forefront of many viewers’ minds. Subsequent to the release of the first feature length trailer, talk has been centered around the star-studded cast and whether or not directors Anthony and Joe Russo will be capable of handling a plethora of Marvel heroes in one movie.
So far, early test screenings have generated relatively positive results, though the ball is still in Marvel Studios court to continue to develop the film as time lingers on towards its May 2016 theatrical release. And yet despite the daunting task at hand, at least one actor who will appear in the new film is eager and optimistic about the ever expanding MCU roster, and his character’s place within it.
In a recent interview conducted by SuperHeroHype, Paul Rudd was particularly forthcoming about the inclusion of his Scott Lang from last summer’s Ant-Man in Civil War, and talked at length on the future of the character on the big screen. When asked to comment about his expectations for Ant-Man’s growing popularity pending his inclusion in the new Captain America film, Rudd was willing to admit that his personal understanding of the interconnected nature of the MCU is relatively lacking, but he does understand the expansive nature of the franchise, stating:
The film that he is currently working on is none other than the pending Phase 4 film Ant-Man & The Wasp, which Rudd will also star in alongside former co-star Evangeline Lily, and will co-write the film’s script with screenwriters Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. As far as working out the logistics of the shooting schedules surrounding the Marvel Studios slate of films, Rudd seemed sure that there would still be room for him to take on other projects as they come about, remarking:
“I know that when I signed up for it that there was always the potential that they’d do another one or it would tie in in some way, but specifically, I wasn’t aware and I’m still not totally aware of how that’s the case. We are doing a second one, so those meetings are starting to be scheduled and underway as far as what it’s going to be. We’ll start writing it soon.”
Seeing as how Rudd has already been able to produce at least one film back-to-back against his appearence in Ant-Man, namely the forthcoming Sundance Film Festival selection The Fundamentals of Caring, it would appear the actor will have plenty of room to move around creatively outside of the MCU. And such a willingness on the part of Marvel Studios in allowing their lead actors the time and flexibility to pursue other projects can only speak well to the working relationship sustained with any and all performers who choose to make an appearance in said franchise installments.
“It’s been very easy. Marvel’s been great, as far as if I have something else and they’ll work around it. It’s not like I’m working on a series which might be a little trickier as far as schedule. I worked on Civil War and I didn’t really work on it for very long, but as far as Ant-Man 2, I already know when that’s going to go, so you just kind of plan accordingly. If anything comes along that I can film before or after and it works out time-wise and it makes sense, Marvel’s been supportive.”
Captain America: Civil War will release on May 6, 2016, followed by Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – May 3, 2019; Inhumans – July 12, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on May 1, July 10 and November 6, 2020.
