BEWARE: The following post, of course, contains massive SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp!

-

Ant-man and the Wasp sees the return of Marvel Studios’ smallest heroes - Scott Lang aka. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne aka. Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) - so what were the biggest spoilers, twists, and surprises in the Ant-Man sequel? We break them down.

Ant-Man and the Wasp picks up two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War, which saw Scott violate the UN’s Sokovia Accords in order to help Steve Rogers. As a result, he was arrested, but made a deal with the FBI to be on house arrest, which is coming to an end. However, his associates, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope, have been on the run for the last two years. When Scott reconnects with them, he learns they’ve been building a Quantum Tunnel in an attempt to rescue Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the Quantum Realm. Unfortunately, there are roadblocks to Hank and Hope getting to the Quantum Realm, including a mysterious new foe they call Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).

Now that Ant-Man and the Wasp is hitting theaters we list the 10 most important spoilers from the 20th installment in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe - including the biggest reveals, twists and surprises from the main film and its post-credits scenes.

Janet “Met” Scott In The Quantum Realm During Ant-Man

Although Hank and Hope have nearly completed work on their Quantum Tunnel by the time Scott meets up with them, they don’t have a way of finding Janet within the Quantum Realm. That is, until Scott calls them out of the blue to tell them he had a vision of meeting Janet when he was in the Quantum Realm during the events of Ant-Man. As Hope figures out, Janet left a “message” inside Scott that they need to get out of his head in order to pinpoint her location in the Quantum Realm.

However, as it’s revealed later in the movie, what Janet left in Scott’s head was more of an “antenna” that she uses to transmit her consciousness into Scott. This leads to one of the movie’s funnier scenes and allows Hank, Janet and Hope to reverse-trace the signal from Scott into the Quantum Realm to figure out Janet’s location.

Scott Gets A New Ant-Man Suit

After the events of Civil War, part of Scott’s agreement with the FBI meant he had to cut all ties to superheroics - that includes Hank and Hope, as well as his super-suit. Early on Scott, tells Hank that he destroyed the suit (though that turns out not to be true). So, Hank gives Scott a new one, but it doesn’t have all the kinks worked out. As a result, Scott gets stuck small - about child-sized - and large at different points in the movie. Generally, it’s played to great comedic effect. Otherwise, the suit seems to be extremely close to the old version.

Ghost’s Origin & S.H.I.E.L.D. Ties

When Wasp and Ant-Man first come up against Ghost, they believe her phasing powers to be the result of the suit she wears. However, it turns out Ghost’s alter-ego Ava was hit by a wave of Quantum energy in an experiment gone wrong as a child and she actually has those abilities. Her suit instead helps her to control her abilities because otherwise she has trouble remaining solid.

Further, the suit was developed by S.H.I.E.L.D., who took in Ava when she was young and trained her to be an assassin. In exchange, S.H.I.E.L.D. was meant to cure her of the “molecular disequilibrium” that was caused by the explosion she survived as a child. Of course, that doesn’t happen and her pursuit to cure herself brings her up against Ant-Man and Wasp.

Ghost Is Bill Foster’s Surrogate Daughter

After the Quantum experiment gone wrong that left Ava an orphan, she was rescued by then-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne) and she became kind of a surrogate daughter to him. Though, when Scott and Hope first meet Ava they believe her to be working on her own, it’s revealed that Bill has been helping the girl for some time, searching for a way to cure or slow down the molecular disequilibrium that threatens Ava’s life.

Ultimately, it’s Bill’s influence that keeps Ava from going too far in order to survive her deteriorating equilibrium and becoming a truly irredeemable villain. Further, in a movie about fathers and daughters, Bill and Ava provide another emotional layer to Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Cassie Wants To Become A Superhero

Fans of the Marvel Comics know that Cassie Lang eventually becomes the superhero Stature, but the MCU’s Cassie (Abby Ryder Forston) has so far been too young to be a superhero. Still Ant-Man and the Wasp clearly sets up Stature as a future hero in the MCU by way of Cassie’s enthusiasm for superheroes. Not only is she supportive of Scott resuming his work as Ant-Man, but she even puts herself forward as a potential partner for his superheroics. Scott laughs it off, but Marvel fans will recognize the film setting up Cassie to eventually become Stature.

Of course, whether that happens in Avengers 4, the as-yet-unannounced Ant-Man 3, or another movie remains to be seen.

Hank Saves Janet From The Quantum Realm

Though some may have guessed Scott, or even Hope, would travel into the Quantum Realm to save Janet, it turns out Hank has to be the one. The reason for this is that Scott and Hope need to remain on Earth in order to protect the Quantum Tunnel from those who would want to steal the tech for themselves. It’s Hank’s first trip into the Quantum Realm, and although Scott tries to prepare his mentor for what the experience will entail, the former Ant-Man is essentially on his own.

That is, of course, until he rescues Janet. The calculations that pinpointed the former Wasp’s location inside the Quantum Realm turn out to be (close to) accurate. However, Hank’s mind gets tricked by the Quantum Realm and Janet actually needs to save him from a vision of the people in his life. But, the pair eventually make it out of the Quantum Realm.

Janet Is Barely In the Movie - But Has Quantum Powers

Much of Ant-Man and the Wasp revolves around rescuing Janet, but aside from a flashback in the opening scene, Scott’s vision and (technically) Scott being “possessed” by the former Wasp, she’s barely in the movie. She’s not rescued until the very end, and when she does appear, she has certain abilities from being in the Quantum Realm for so long. Not only does she somehow avert Hank losing his mind, she also stabilizes the Quantum energy in Ghost.

However, besides those few scenes - and the mid-credits scene - Janet doesn’t appear much in the movie. Instead, Ant-Man and the Wasp focuses more on the rescue mission to find her, rather than Janet herself, which will likely leave viewers with plenty of questions about what exactly happened to Janet in the Quantum Realm.

End-Credits Scenes Connect to Infinity War

Ant-Man and the Wasp has two post-credits scenes, one at the mid-point and another at the very end. The main story of Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn’t connect to Avengers: Infinity War - instead tying more into Civil War. However, the mid-credits scene directly ties into Infinity War, with Scott traveling into the Quantum Realm and being stuck there when Hank, Hope and Janet are dusted by Thanos’ universe-altering snap. Plus, with mentions of time vortexes in the Quantum Realm, there’s plenty to dig into in terms of how Ant-Man and the Wasp sets up Avengers 4.

As for the second end-credits scene, a camera pans through Scott’s home in San Francisco post-snap, but no one’s there. Does this mean Scott’s friends and family were also dusted? This scene is more of a gag because, though it takes place after Thanos’ snap, it ends simply with the giant ant drumming.

Bill Foster Never Becomes Goliath

In the comics, Bill Foster is the alter-ego of the superhero Goliath. Since Fishburne was cast in the roles, fans have speculated about whether he would suit up as Goliath in Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, while Bill and Scott discuss the former’s work with Hank on using Pym Particles to increase his size, he doesn’t officially become Goliath. Unfortunately, based on this movie, it seems Bill’s Goliath days are all in the past. Still, Ant-Man and the Wasp leaves the door open for Bill to suit up in the future, so perhaps Goliath could appear in a third Ant-Man film.

No Marvel Cinematic Universe Cameos

Ant-Man and the Wasp features two versions of each its titular superheroes, but the latest MCU installment doesn’t offer any fun Avengers cameos. So, those hoping to see Hawkeye pop up in a end-credits scene, or another run-in between Ant-Man and Falcon will be disappointed. Still, fans excited to see Scott Lang team up with his fellow MCU superheroes will get just that when Ant-Man returns next year in Avengers 4.
