One of the surprise summer hits of 2015 was Marvel’s Ant-Man. While it had the Marvel Studios branding and the Disney marketing machine behind it, it was just unclear how good the superhero movie would be - what with director Edgar Wright dropping out of the project so soon before the start of production. But once audiences saw Ant-Man in action, they were by and large taken with the shrinking Marvel superhero and his adventures.
A big part of the success of Ant-Man came from Peyton Reed’s direction, but also Paul Rudd and Adam McKay’s comedic touch. McKay was actually brought on to Ant-Man once Wright left the project, but he ultimately turned down the directing job, so Reed could step in to make the movie. McKay stayed on to help re-write the Ant-Man script with Rudd, who played the lead Scott Lang AKA Ant-Man. While McKay is seeing a lot of success as an Oscar-nominated director of The Big Short, it looks like he’s also coming back to work on the Marvel movie sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
In an interview with Nerdist, director Adam McKay talked about what it’s like directing an Academy Award-nominated movie and if he’d return to Ant-Man and the Wasp. McKay confirmed that he will, indeed, come back to Marvel Studios to help bring Ant-Man and the Wasp to the big screen, which is slated to reach theaters in July 2018. According to McKay:
“We’ve been talking to Marvel actually. We just talked to them the other day, and it looks like I will be involved. I don’t know if it’s gonna be right from page one. But it looks like I will definitely be involved. There you go. There’s a little headline for the fanboys!”
Although McKay said he’s coming back to the sequel, it’s still unclear in what capacity. Reed will return to direct, while fellow returning Ant-Man co-screenwriting duo Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari will work with Rudd on the Ant-Man and the Wasp script. It’s more than likely that McKay will (at the least) have a hand in bringing the sequel’s story elements together (if not also the script itself), but at the least it’s encouraging to see Marvel retain most of the team that successfully brought Ant-Man’s world to life the first time around.
Beyond that, McKay has already expressed an interest in writing a Wasp solo movie with Evangeline Lilly in the lead role for Marvel Studios, at some point in the future. However, for the time being, we’ll just wait and see how things shake out for the Ant-Man sequel first.
