Ant-Man and The Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen says she’s interested in doing a spinoff movie based on the Thunderbolts. John-Kamen plays the villainous Ghost in the fast-approaching Ant-Man sequel, a big bad that remains relatively wrapped in mystery and intrigue. Her abilities have been shown off in recent trailers and clips, and the newest Ant-Man 2 images give the best look yet at the character.
In the comics, the character Ghost was often part of a popular group of anti-heroes and super-criminals called the Thunderbolts. The faction went through various incarnations starting in the ’90s, with Ghost often serving as one of its main members. It’s possible for Marvel Studios to make a Thunderbolts movie happen if they really want to - and studio president Kevin Feige knows now that John-Kamen would be on board if the opportunity presented itself.
As she told Screen Rant and other outlets during a visit to the set of Ant-Man and the Wasp, John-Kamen was well aware of the character’s place in the Marvel Comics universe as a member of the Thunderbolts and an adversary of Iron Man. Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), who’s still alive in the MCU, is the best-known leader of the Thunderbolts, which leaves the possibility open for forming the group on the big screen. Here’s what John-Kamen had to say about that idea:
“That would be fun! That would be fun. I think, you know, as well, in the original comics Ghost was with Iron Man, it was actually originally Iron Man (villain), you know, and I actually went when I was in Atlanta, went actually bought the Thunderbolts comic books. Um, I mean with any Marvel character whatever happens to them, you always go the possibility is endless. And with me it would be an honor to work with any of the heroes, and any of the antagonist, and any of the things in the Marvel Universe. I mean, yeah, that would be amazing!?
Not much is known about Ghost at this point, beyond the fact that she stole some technology belonging to Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and used it to give herself her intangibility powers, which allow her to pass through solid objects like walls, and even other people.
Of course, it’s unclear if Ghost even survives Ant-Man and The Wasp. If she does, then John-Kamen would almost certainly be on board to return as the villain if a Thunderbolts-centered movie became a reality. With the continued existence of Zemo in the MCU, as well as other former leaders like Luke Cage, if Marvel wants to, they could assemble the MCU version of the Thunderbolts in some capacity.
The Thunderbolts could be a group of villains, perhaps for the next generation of Iron Man movies, or even get their own vehicle as Marvel’s answer to Suicide Squad. As of now, there’s no real indication that Marvel Studios is planning anything related to the group. But there’s little shortage of possibilities when it comes to those characters, and it’s encouraging for those who want to see it happen that, contingent on what happens in Ant-Man and The Wasp, there’s at least one performer on board with the idea.
