It looks as if Ant-Man & the Wasp will once again explore the MCU of the 1980s. While the first Ant-Man was a relatively stand-alone story, it still offered a surprising number of connections to the larger MCU. From Scott’s battle with the Falcon to a thug sporting a Ten Rings tattoo, the film felt like part of something bigger. One of the best moments, however, came from the various flashbacks to the Cold War Era of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The opening flashback not only teased the construction of the Triskelion, but brought back Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and John Slattery as Howard Stark. The film also teased an early iteration of the Avengers with scenes from some of Ant-Man’s missions for the government in the ’80s. One even featured the original Wasp as she sacrificed herself to stop a Soviet threat to the U.S. All of these moments not only helped to flesh out the present day story, but they teased a richer tapestry of events that occurred in the MCU during in the past.

Omega Underground got ahold of a casting call for Ant-Man & the Wasp that’s seeking “1980s Military Goons.” And unless the film is going for a retro look, it’s safe to assume they’ll be used in yet another flashback sequence.

Earlier this month, we learned about another potential ’80s flashback centered on the Wasp, but this new update suggests a more action-focused bent to it. Given the date of the previous scene, it may tie into Wasp’s disappearance, seen in the original film. These scenes are said to shoot next week, so we could end up seeing some set photos that provide more insight into what’s happening. We’ve already seen Ant-Man suited up and received a tease of new villain Ghost from leaks, so it wouldn’t be surprising to get a glimpse of the flashback scenes as filming continues.

Details about the plot of Ant-Man & the Wasp are thin, but we know Janet van Dyne and Dr. Bill Foster will appear. This flashback, then, could feature more time within S.H.I.E.L.D. in the ’80s or offer another mission with the original Wasp. Since Michael Douglas was digitally de-aged in the first film, perhaps Ant-Man & the Wasp will do the same for Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne.

Given that most of the Marvel movies have taken place in the present day, there’s a lot about the past of the world we don’t know. Some films have teased moments here and there, but Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter are the only MCU projects that have really explored other eras. With Captain Marvel set to take place in the ’90s, however, it would be interesting for the Ant-Man sequel to further flesh out the years prior in the MCU. Who knows, maybe Carol Danvers will even be teased in Ant-Man & the Wasp.
