[Warning: Minor SPOILERS ahead for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice]

Zack Snyder’s upcoming action blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to lay the groundwork for the future of the DC Extended Universe, including Justice League. In addition to the two titular superheroes, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) will also play a substantial role in the film and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is expected to appear as well, though he has yet to be shown in any of the trailers.
That means that four of the main Justice League members will be encountered in Batman v Superman (hence the movie’s subtitle), but despite some complaints that the most recent trailer gave away too much about the movie’s plot, there’s every possibility that Batman v Superman still has some plenty of surprises up its sleeve. Unfortunately for Warner Bros.’ love of secrecy, however, another one of these surprises has just been let slip.
Speaking to Omelete (via CBM), Batman v Superman costume designer Michael Wilkinson, who is also working on costumes for other DCEU movies including Justice League, talked about the process of adapting a comic book superhero costume for the big screen. In the process, he confirmed an old rumor that The Flash will make an appearance in the film.
Based on this quote, it sounds like The Flash’s appearance in Batman v Superman will be very brief, perhaps as part of a flash-forward sequence or vision. It’s important to note that Wilkinson says he’s still “looking forward” to designing a costume for Ezra Miller’s version of The Flash, indicating that he has yet to actually put the costume together. If we had to guess, we’d say that the “glimpse” perhaps consists of a blurry vision of the Justice League’s future, a background newsreel detailing The Flash’s antics in Central City, or maybe a sudden flash of lightning as the character zips past. A rumor from earlier this year claimed that The Flash is seen on security monitors stopping a robbery, so perhaps that’s what Wilkinson is referring to.
“I’m not really at the liberty to talk about The Flash right now, but it’s something that you’ll be seeing in the future in our films. You do get a glimpse of him, of course, in Batman v Superman. But I’m really looking forward to taking the amazing, iconic costume for The Flash and interpreting it in a fresh way where Ezra Miller is playing The Flash. He’s an extraordinary performer, he has a sort of interesting sense of humor and the youth that will be great for Barry Allen and I think he’s going to make a great Flash.”
Wilkinson also offered details about an intriguing scene shown in the trailers, in which Batman is seen in a post-apocalyptic world, surrounded by flying monsters, before being apprehended by Superman’s soldiers and held prisoner by the Man of Steel himself, who rips off Batman’s mask. As some may have already guessed, this is actually part of a dream sequence.
We highly recommend reading the full interview, which is packed with interesting insights into the design of Batman v Superman’s costumes and the implementation of Snyder’s vision. For example, Superman’s suit actually contains a quote from Joseph Campbell - “Where we thought to stand alone, we will be with all the world” - that is translated into Kryptonian and woven into the suit’s design. Let’s hope Wilkinson doesn’t get into too much trouble for leaking these details, because we hope to see his costume designs in many DC movies to come.
“It’s like a dream that Ben has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it’s like the end of the world, trying to survive and then of course Superman and his minions come, so it’s sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman.”
