Update: After less than 24 hours since this post, Apple has removed the DiscoRecorder tethering app from the App Store. The developer forwarded along an automated email that he received. He received no specific explanation from Apple.
Since the App Store’s launch, a few developers have tried creative tactics to enable free and unlimited tethering for iPhone users. Most of these tricks either made their way onto the App Store due to an apparently accidental app acceptance by Apple, or by way of a creativity. Some developers have hid the ability to enable unlimited tethering through “easter eggs.”
Today comes another attempt at hiding tethering from Apple in an App Store app. A new app called DiscoRecorder [$1.99] by Michael Leatherbury offers a series of simple steps to allow unlimited and free tethering (aside from the data package you already pay). The app disguises itself as a simple voice recording tool. Here are the steps to enable tethering:
Create a new network on your Mac.
Name it adhoc
Connect your iPhone to it
Find the IP address of the adhoc network by pressing the blue right arrow next to the network name in iPhone settings
Go back to your Mac, go to Network Preferences
Click WiFi on the left
Click Advanced on the bottom
Click Proxies on the top bar
Click to enable “Web Proxy”
Type in the IP address we found earlier under Web Proxy Server. Type in 6667 in the field to the right
Type in the same IP under SOCKS Proxy. Type in 6668 in the field to the right. Don’t check the SOCKS Proxy box.
Click OK and then Apply.
Open the DiscoRecorder app on your iPhone
Make a quick recording.
Rename the recording to PearSauce269.aac (case sensitive)
Click the WiFi button right below in the app. And done. It may take a re-launch of the app to work.
Here’s a video walkthrough just in case:

To go back to your normal WiFi network, you will need to disable the Proxy settings you inputed into Network Preferences.
To keep the tethering running, you MUST keep the app OPEN.
The app will probably be pulled soon.
