Annabelle summons all manner of demons and evil spirits in the second trailer for The Conjuring mid-quel, Annabelle Comes Home. After starring in a pair of prequels that explored her backstory, the eponymous evil doll is back with a third spinoff, which picks up shortly after the original Conjuring’s prologue. The film follows demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they lock Annabelle away in their home’s artifacts “museum”, lest she cause any more hubbub. Of course, you just can’t keep a bad doll down, as the Warrens learn when Annabelle targets their 10-year old daughter, Judy (Mckenna Grace).
With a month to go before its June release date, Warner Bros. has kicked off the next wave of marketing for Annabelle Comes Home. The film got its first trailer in March, and it focused on establishing the horror movie’s plot and new human characters - like Judy’s babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and her friend Daniela (Katie Sarife). By comparison, the second preview zeroes in on the film’s scares and offers a sneak peek at some of the Conjuring universe monsters introduced in this installment.
Warner Bros. has now released the second Annabelle Comes Home trailer online, and will presumably attach the promo to this weekend’s new horror offering, Blumhouse’s Ma, in theaters. You can check it out ahead of then in the space below.
The new Annabelle Comes Home trailer specifically highlights The Ferryman, a ghoul who’s brand-new to the larger Conjuring universe. He probably won’t be the only demon introduced in the spinoff either. Indeed, based on the premise and footage released so far, Annabelle will be awakening most (if not all) of the malicious specters that were trapped in the Warrens’ artifacts room, prior to her arrival. Annabelle has a fairly straightforward reason for doing that, too; as the creepy voice heard at the end of the trailer puts it, she needs a soul and will kill either Judy, Mary Ellen, and/or even Daniela to get it. That’s to say, the spinoff’s “Nightmare at the Museum” premise is arguably a bigger sell point here than Annabelle herself (and understandably so, considering she’s already starred in two films of her own).
In fact, Annabelle Comes Home seems more interested in expanding The Conjuring movie universe and setting up potential spinoffs based around new monsters (like The Ferryman) than actually telling a meaningful story involving Annabelle and the Warrens. And while it’s possible the actual film will have more substance than that, the marketing suggests this could be end up being the most disposable addition to the franchise yet (as might’ve been inevitable, given that it’s a mid-quel). Still, the movie was directed by longtime Conjuring spinoff writer Gary Dauberman - drawing from a script and story he concocted with series architect James Wan - so it may yet offer its fair share of decent, if also forgettable, thrills and chills.
