Although this year’s Emmy Awards broadcast was a mostly unfunny affair, it did yield one particularly bright moment in the form of presenters Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, whose banter and chemistry was memorable enough that they just landed the job of hosting the Golden Globes in 2019. Unexpected though they pairing may be, it is a smart and exciting move on behalf of NBC, Dick Clark Productions, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as it offers viewers a reason to tune in beyond the usual celebrity watching and cringing as lengthy acceptance speeches are cut off by the orchestra.
The announcement is a sign of the Golden Globes’ desire to return to a successful formula; namely that of hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who hosted three times and helped make the three-hour ceremony a far more watchable event, one that wasn’t looked down on (well, not entirely) as being the little sibling to the Oscars. And given the profile of both Samberg and Oh, both stars of their own successful television shows, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Killing Eve, the announcement flies in the face of those who make the very legitimate argument that the Golden Globes doesn’t need a host of any kind whatsoever.

Nevertheless, NBC Universal made the announcement earlier today in an official release that confirmed the two stars as co-hosts of the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
With just over a month to go until the ceremony takes place, the parties involved seemingly took their time finding the right host(s) for the event. That mirrors the current goings-on of the Academy Awards’ search for someone to host The 91st Academy Awards, which, as was recently announced will be comedian and actor Kevin Hart.
“Sandra and Andy are the perfect choices to host this world-class event,” said Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment. “They bring wit, charm and style to a room filled with the very best of film and television. It’s sure to be another unforgettable fun-filled night.”
Though the choice to bring Hart on board will likely give the Oscars a better chance at earning back some of its slipping ratings, it’s hard to beat the Golden Globes’ choice for co-hosts, in terms of originality. With any luck Samberg and Oh will see the chemistry they had at the Emmys recreated in January.
