In 2006, the documentary An Inconvenient Truth tackled global warming and showcased Al Gore as more than a former Vice President. The 2006 documentary won two Academy Awards, for Original Song and Documentary feature. Critics loved the movie and praised it for its honesty. Top film critic Roger Ebert said in 2006 when An Inconvenient Truth was released: “In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: You owe it to yourself to see this film. If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to.”

Ten years after the original movie was released, a sequel called An Inconvenient Truth 2 has been announced and will be hitting theaters in 2017, thanks to the folks at Paramount Pictures. This sequel will be a little bit different than its predecessor, expanding its focus and subject matter to reflect the studies of global warming that have been conducted over the past decade.

The An Inconvenient Truth sequel will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival on opening night. The original movie was featured at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, but not in the same spotlight. Al Gore had this to say on the sequel:

Paramount Classics distributed the original An Inconvenient Truth in theaters back in 2006. The movie grossed $24.1 million domestically and $25.6 million in international territories. While those numbers aren’t staggering for a normal summer release, they are quite impressive for both a documentary and a movie available only in limited release. Paramount will take An Inconvenient Truth 2 to a wider audience around the world.

“Now more than ever we must rededicate ourselves to solving the climate crisis. But we have reason to be hopeful; the solutions to the crisis are at hand. I’m deeply honored and grateful that Paramount Pictures and Participant Media have once again taken on the task of bringing the critical story of the climate crisis to the world.”

An Inconvenient Truth ranks as the 11th highest grossing documentary domestically of all time. The movie also was the second best performing limited release movie in 2006, trailing only Deep Sea 3D, an IMAX release. The widest release the movie ever got was 587 theaters.

An Inconvenient Truth 2 will bring a new message about global warming. The documentary is focusing on the World’s climate crisis with new plans of how to help the environment. It will be incredibly interesting to see what has changed in 10 years and how Gore and his team will portray the United States as getting better or worse at tackling global warming.

Ten years later, it is interesting to think of the impact the first movie had. The original concept and plot of the documentary came from a PowerPoint presentation. The movie became so much bigger than that, winning over critics and fans to help fight for change. An Inconvenient Truth 2 can have the same impact in 2017, but possibly on a much larger scale with its key position at the Sundance Film Festival and Paramount spreading the movie into wider release.
