Amigo Supermarkets has been in the world market for more than a century now. The company knows its customers better than any other competitors. This supermarket chain is famous for selling popular local brand products. Promoting local brand products is very important for product awareness all over the country.

Background of Amigo Supermarket

This famous Spanish supermarket chain was established and founded way back in 1920. But, the initial name was Supermercados Amigo. The supermarket chain was opened by Jose Marti Fuentes. The company might be owned by Walmart but, its main headquarters are located in Puerto Rico.

Supermercados Amigo was the first supermarket chain to open in Puerto Rico. There were very few supermarket stores that were available in Puerto Rico at that time. After three decades some famous supermarkets like Grand Union and Coop Supermarkets entered Puerto Rico. These multinational companies changed the business plan of Amigo Supermarket.

Later in the 1990s, Amigo Supermarket ran into a serious financial crisis. There was a time when the company couldn’t provide employee salaries. The company started losing out money and income was not a chance. Additionally, there were many strikes held by the employees and put the company to a bad reputation.

New Owner

The downfall of Amigo Supermarket led to a new owner of all of its supermarket chains. It was in July 2022, Walmart purchased all Supermercados Amigo chains. This purchase for Walmart became a controversial business strategy by Walmart.

Unfortunately, we do not have the exact transaction amount that was made during the purchase. Walmart Inc. was a strong company and due to this purchase, many other companies located in Puerto Rico had to close down. Other supermarkets’ stores were in fear if Walmart and Sam’s Club would overcome them as well.

After Walmart purchased Amigo, all the closed stores were planned to open again. Soon Walmart did all the procedures as per their plan. Initially, Walmart did not change any infrastructure of the supermarkets they just went on with the previous one.

The Rise of Unfairness

After Walmart purchased Amigo Supermarket chains, many customers felt that it was unfair. As we have mentioned earlier, after this acquisition other retail stores closed down. The other supermarket chains thought that they couldn’t compete with Walmart in the market.

Not only supermarkets in Puerto Rico, but many small grocery stalls also had to close down. Additionally, even some of the local stores had to close down. The store owners thought they would not be able to compete when Walmart and Sam’s Club is in the market.

Some small retailers served the previous Amigo stores but, that changed after the acquisition. There were some Amigo stores in Puerto Rico that were closed down due to small conditions and the thought of the customers.

But, we are quite sure that Walmart as a company did not have all these as their part of business strategy. All of these were just the outcome of the acquisition of Amigo Supermarkets. Interestingly, the Amigo stores that were closed down were re-branded as SuperMax and Pitusa Markets.

Products from Amigo Supermarket

The primary product at Amigo Supermarkets was all sorts of groceries. Later, after the acquisition, Walmart introduced many other products for the customers. The customers were later satisfied with the products and services that were being provided by Walmart.

Interestingly, Walmart ensured that the products sold are of the best quality. Other than that, the company ensured that it comes with a cheap price tag. Some of the products sold at Amigo Supermarkets are the following:-
