The latest trailer for American Horror Story: 1984 brings the anthology series back to a time of summer camp slasher flicks. This season is the ninth for the horror anthology series, which first premiered in 2011 on FX. The show takes a different approach with each season, telling a different story straight out of American folklore and legend.
American Horror Story has covered a lot of ground: alien abductions, haunted asylums, killer clowns, carnival freak shows, the legend of Roanoke and, most recently, the Apocalypse. The first trailer for this season, though, went back to the 80s, including big hair, blue eyeshadow and serial killers armed with knives. This season will have a lot of familiar faces from previous seasons. Two notable regular cast members are missing: Evan Peters and Sarah Paulsen, although the latter could show up in a small cameo role.
FX posted a new trailer for American Horror Story: 1984 that shows off even more of the 80s vibe with the cast headed to summer camp. But this summer camp is like something out of Friday the 13th. There is a hooded serial killer on the loose slicing campers’ throats as they sleep. This murderer is a man named “Mr. Jingles,” an escapee from a nearby psychiatric hospital. Also, don’t miss the direct nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer when the car runs over someone in the road. Of course, those in the vehicle vow to keep it secret.
Horror fans will note that the name “Mr. Jingles” isn’t a new one to the genre. In Stephen King’s The Green Mile, Mr. Jingles is the name of the mouse that John Coffey revives after a prison security guard kills it. This reference is likely intentional, perhaps as a small acknowledgment to the master of horror. It certainly looks like American Horror Story: 1984 is going to scratch that itch for 80s horror movie fans who want to see some slasher action.
One thing that isn’t certain, though, is where American Horror Story might eventually stream online. When Disney acquired Fox, it shut down the FX streaming service. But now that Disney owns Hulu, it’s possible American Horror Story could turn up there. Hulu seems to be where Disney wants its more adult-oriented content, so that might happen. This trailer will increase demand for the series, so it would be a shame if FX doesn’t have anywhere to stream one of its hottest shows.
American Horror Story: 1984 premieres on September 18.
