The second season of American Crime Story, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, officially confirms a January 2018 release date. After having switched places with Katrina as Ryan Murphy decides to retool what supposedly was the sophomore outing of the true-crime anthology (focusing on a smaller scale story than the initial politics-centric one), the upcoming installment of the series has moved up its release date from 2019 to early next year.
Boasting a stellar cast of characters spearheaded by Edgar Ramirez playing the late fashion designer and Darren Criss taking on the role of perpetrator Andrew Cunanan, The Assassination of Gianni Versace retraces the events leading to the horrific shooting of the acclaimed fashion mogul on the steps of his Miami Beach home in 1997 that rocked both the Hollywood and fashion community. Coming from the critically acclaimed first season of the show, People v. O.J. Simpson, the sophomore outing of the anthology has some high expectations to meet.
Screen Crush confirms that American Crime Story: Versace will debut on Wednesday, January 17, as announced in last night’s episode of American Horror Story: Cult (another Murphy production) via a series of new teasers. With the release date of the sophomore season of the series coming in just a couple months, we can expect a flurry promotional materials in the next several weeks, giving us a hint as to what the new outing will bring.
The first teaser of Versace arrived last month but did not get into anything specific regarding the narrative tread of the installment. Instead, it highlighted on the murder act itself, with the reverberating sound of gunshots sending a flock birds scattering away. The shot then pans out to the very steps of the Verscace mansion where the crime took place 20 years ago.
American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace also features a bevy of supporting characters including Penelope Cruz as Gianni’s sister, Donatella Versace, Ricky Martin as Versace’s partner, Antonio D’Amico, and Finn Witrock as Jeff Trail, Cunanan’s friend and first victim. Meanwhile, a slew of future installments for the anthology show are already in various stages of production, such as the previously mentioned Katrina (which will now also feature Murphy’s frequent actor collaborator, Sarah Paulson) and the fourth season supposedly taking on the controversial scandal that rocked the White House involving President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinski.
