AMC’s The Terror released a first look teaser and images from the upcoming miniseries event executive produced by Ridley Scott. The director’s hands have been full scrubbing Kevin Spacey from his new movie, inadvertently intimidating Denis Villeneuve on the Blade Runner 2049 set, and talking up the next chapter in the Alien franchise, but that hasn’t stopped him from taking part in the adaptation of this “true” tale. The upcoming miniseries has been in the works for what seems like ages, and now the fictionalized account of a harrowing expedition gone wrong is ready for the world to see, as the network begins its marketing campaign ahead of the March 2018 premiere date.
The title and the early marketing for AMC’s The Terror are admittedly a bit dodgy. The series’ bleak, ice-covered setting evokes John Carpenter’s The Thing, while the title is vague enough that, when mixed with images of blood-streaked snow, the sounds of men screaming, and the look of panic and dread on the faces of both Jared Harris and Ciarán Hinds, it certainly seems like something supernatural is going on. Normally, the addition of “Based on a true story” would be enough to dispel that line of thought, but since every horror film about demonic possession made in the last 10 years employs the same strategy the phrase no longer carries any weight.
Thankfully, the cast of The Terror does, as the aforementioned Harris and Hinds are joined by Tobias Menzies (aka The Hardest Working Man in Show Business) to tell the “true” tale of the Royal Navy’s journey into uncharted territory. That expedition sees them battle extreme cold, starvation, and eventually one another. Feast your eyes on the first look images and synopsis for the miniseries below:

Executive producers and co-showrunners David Kajganich and Soo Hugh released the following statement:
“Inspired by a true story, The Terror centers on the Royal Navy’s perilous voyage into unchartered territory as the crew attempts to discover the Northwest Passage. Faced with treacherous conditions, limited resources, dwindling hope and fear of the unknown; the crew is pushed to the brink of extinction. Frozen, isolated and stuck at the end of the earth, The Terror highlights all that can go wrong when a group of men, desperate to survive, struggle not only with the elements, but with each other.”
As revealed in the showrunners’ statement, AMC’s The Terror premieres in March. Perhaps between now and then the network will reveal more about the series, and provide more insight into the terrifying ordeal is the crew is up against.
“The Terror captures a rare combination of fascinating history, complex and flawed characters, the inextinguishable human spirit and the horror and promise of an uncharted world. We are looking forward to bringing viewers into this world in March.”
